Big Friends Little Friends Mentoring Program

Sep. 25, 2024 12:15 p.m.
My name is Kristina Ploof and I am reaching out on behalf of Big Friends Little Friends - a mentoring program serviced by Family Services of Merrimack Valley. We currently have over 50 children on our waitlist, hoping to be matched with a caring adult in the Merrimack Valley.
A common thread in my work experience is the desire to help people, especially our youth, in reaching their full potential. I continue to exercise this goal as a Volunteer Recruiter and Mentor Match Coordinator at Family Services of Merrimack Valley. I believe everybody has the potential to succeed as long as they are given the necessary tools and opportunities to thrive. Mentorship can have these kinds of lasting impacts on the lives of young adults. Through my work in the Mentorship Department at FSMV, I am dedicated to ensuring that the children we serve are matched with reliable, kind and positively influential adults.A common thread in my work experience is the desire to help people, especially our youth, in reaching their full potential. Graham McKay

Sailing North of The Artic Circle

Oct. 23, 2024 12:15 p.m.

Captain Graham McKay, Marine Archaeologist & Boatbuilder

Born and raised along the Merrimack River in Amesbury, Massachusetts, I’ve always been fascinated with boats and the water. After four years of studying economics and playing baseball at Harvard I found myself not wanting to head to Wall St. along with the rest of my class. Thus, my incurable interest in all things maritime led me to become both a commercial fisherman, and professional sailor. By 29, I was: A Sea Captain, A Commercial Diver, and a Fisheries Scientist. Ethically, the killing of marine life involved in commercial fishing became too much for me, and it was at this time I chose to further my education in Maritime History and Archaeology, and moved to the U.K. to attend the University of Bristol where I obtained my Master’s Degree in Maritime Archaeology. I am now the Executive Director and Master Boatbuilder at Lowell’s Boat Shop in Amesbury, MA. Historically speaking, Lowell’s is the oldest operating wooden boat building business in the United States, as well as a working museum, whose mission is dedicated to continuing both the education and preservation of the craft of wooden boat building. (http://www.lowellsboatshop.com/) For the past 8 years I have continued to build boats, captain tall ships, and have launched several youth programs in boat-building and related maritime experiences. I have travelled throughout New England teaching and lecturing on the art and craft of wooden boat building, and have consulted on marine archaeological projects and findings.

Beyond Plastics - Working To End

Jan. 08, 2025 12:15 p.m.

Andrea Lacroix has been interested in trash and recycling for as long as she can remember. She has served on her town’s Waste Reduction Committee for the past 10 years and is active in community events promoting sustainability. In October, 2022, she took Judith Enck’s master class on plastic pollution and was stunned by the extent not only of plastic waste but of the health issues faced by humans as a result. She joined the Speakers’ Bureau to do her part in educating as many people as possible. She lives in Ipswich, MA.

Joe Buckley, Director AMSB DPW

Amesbury Public Works Department Update

Jan. 22, 2025 12:15 p.m.

The City of Amesbury announced the hiring of Joseph Buckley as the new Director of the Department of Public Works (DPW). Buckley comes to the position with over 25 years of public work service here in Massachusetts. Mr. Buckley’s start date was May 15, 2023

Joseph began his career in 1995 in the City of Worcester, managing the Sewer Operations Division for 12 years as Assistant Director. Since 2019, he has held the position of Director of Public Works in the Town of Rutland Massachusetts until accepting his position with Amesbury.

Joseph Buckley holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from The University of Massachusetts at Lowell and a Graduate Certificate in Local Government Leadership and Management from Suffolk University in Boston.

Joe Buckley said, “Whether as an engineer or a manager, throughout my career I have worked as a problem solver. I believe a Public Works Director is simply that, a day-to-day problem solver, keeping the roads functional and the sanitary conditions of the city acceptable. It is easy to get wrapped up in the public works projects people see, like a newly paved road or walkway, or critical operations like snow plowing, but I also have experience in the important tasks people sometimes take for granted, like safe drinking water, responsible operations of sewer systems, drainage infrastructure, and impacts to river systems.  Amesbury Public Works supports the folks who live, work, and simply stop by there. I am honored and looking forward to being part of the team whose goal is to meet those needs today and into the future.”
